About Koenigsegg
History of Koenigsegg
In 1994, 22-year-old Christian von Koenigsegg formed the Koenigsegg Project, setting his sights on creating a world-class sports car. The talented young engineer and his team quickly created an incredible prototype, the CC. Many of its design elements eventually made their way into the production models.
After years of meticulous development, the Koenigsegg CC8S was unveiled as the Swedish automaker’s first production model. The company heavily reworked a Ford Modular 4.6L V-8 engine and placed it inside a supercar platform weighing only 2,590 lbs. (1,175 kg).
The CC8S is packed with innovative technology, including patented powered vertically-opening doors and a central free-flowing exhaust system. It also used a removable hardtop for an extra touch of elegance.
The Koenigsegg CC8S was an immediate hit. Although there was vast interest, only 6 units were created due to production costs and restraints.
But in 2004, the newer Koenigsegg CCR was unleashed, using larger wheels and tires, upgraded chassis and suspension, and an additional supercharger for increased power. The CCR broke the record for the fastest production car at 241.01 mph (387.87 km/h) and forever marked the brand into automotive history.
Since then, the Swedish luxury car maker has continued its upward trajectory, never letting success lead to complacency, and finding new ways to bring the x-factor.
The Koenigsegg Agera RS was another record-setting model, using a twin-turbo V-8 to reach 277.87 mph (447.19 km/h). And now, the Koenigsegg Jesko Absolut is the fastest car with the Koenigsegg logo, at a theoretical top speed of 330 mph (531 km/h), making it one of the fastest cars in the world.
Koenigsegg has impressed again by releasing a four-seater megacar unlike anything else produced. The Gemera uses advanced hybrid technology to minimize the powertrain size and add two seats where the usual mid-engine powerplant would go.
Understanding Koenigsegg car range
The Koenigsegg model names began with CC, short for competition coupe. The first production model, the CC8S, is a competition coupe powered by a V-8 with a supercharger.
The CCX is the tenth anniversary CC model, celebrating the prototype release. The new CC850 celebrates founder Christian von Koenigsegg’s 50th birthday.
Other recent Koenigsegg cars use one-word model names from the Swedish language. Agera means to take action, Regera means to reign, Gemera roughly means to give more, and Jesko is a tribute to the founder’s father, Jesko Koenigsegg.
Surprising facts about Koenigsegg
You might think having your vehicle’s carbon fiber body panels painted would be more expensive than leaving them bare. But that’s far from the truth with Koenigsegg models.
The Koenigsegg Jesko was available with naked carbon fiber, but it was an extremely-expensive option, adding approximately $440,000 to the total purchase price. You can have the carbon-fiber body clear coated for a slightly lower cost of $300,000. Or you can skip these and choose from the standard color selection at no additional cost.
Where is Koenigsegg made?
Koenigsegg is based in Sweden and produces its cars at a factory in Angelholm, Sweden. Each vehicle is made to extremely high standards, using advanced technology and equipment to ensure top quality.
Koenigsegg electric cars
Koenigsegg has embraced some electric propulsion through its electric hybrid models. These include the four-seater Gemera priced at $1.7 million and the megacar Regera at $1.9 million.
A 100% electric Koenigsegg does not yet exist. The Swedish luxury automaker understands that it must create something special to keep up with the ultra-fast EV models and electric motorcycles on the roads already, but it has not released definite plans for what that will be.
Koenigsegg models
Let’s jump into the details and technical specifications for the Koenigsegg cars of today and the past.
Koenigsegg CC850
Many high-performance automakers aim for the ideal power-to-weight ratio. But Koenigsegg always puts its money where its mouth is, first proven with the Koenigsegg One:1 and its 1 PS per 1 kg. The Swedish megacar producer sets a new benchmark with the latest model.
The CC850 sits at 1hp:1kg by pumping out a stomach-churning 1,385 horsepower on its featherlight curb weight of 1,385 kg (3,053 lbs.). It also throws in 1,385 Nm (1,021 lb-ft) of torque for good measure. This mind-boggling achievement dwarfs other high-performance models from Lamborghini and Porsche.
The Koenigsegg CC850 is a celebration of founder Christian von Koenigsegg’s 50th birthday and the 20th anniversary of the first production CC8S. 70 units of this glorious goliath will eventually be produced.

Koenigsegg Gemera
You might be used to powerful four-seaters from brands like Mercedes-Benz, BMW, and Audi. But most insanely high-performance vehicles eliminate rear seats to use a mid-engine layout.
And that’s where the Koenigsegg Gemera shifts the paradigm. Despite cranking out a massive 1,700 horsepower, it still has room for you and three of your closest friends. It removed the oversized combustion engine and instead uses three electric motors combined with a compact 600-horsepower combustion Koenigsegg Gemera engine.
The Koenigsegg Gemera is a four-seater megacar ready to go for a double date like no other. It also happens to have a 1,000-km (621-mile) combined range. Koenigsegg plans to produce 300 units of the Gemera, the most out of the Koenigsegg factory for a single model.

Koenigsegg Jesko
With great risk comes great reward. This might as well be the motto for Koenigsegg, who somehow pulls off the impossible and creates vehicles so impressive, it moves the entire industry forward.
The Koenigsegg Jesko Absolut, a low-drag variant of the Jesko, held the title of the fastest car in the world, reaching speeds up to 330 mph (531 km/h). And it does so on a platform that isn’t just great to look at but is also full of interior creature comforts like climate control, high-quality stereo with AirPlay, and more legroom than most other supercars.
The Koenigsegg Jesko feeds 20 bar (290 psi) pressurized air into the turbos to reduce lag, features an all-new Light Speed Transmission, and uses three fuel injectors per cylinder to maximize performance. It’s no wonder it received Top Gear’s 2022 Hypercar of the Year award.

Koenigsegg Agera
Although newer models have surpassed the achievements, the Koenigsegg Agera car firmly secured its place in the history books. It was Top Gear’s 2010 Hypercar of the Year and continued to achieve greatness for many years after.
Not only does it have the looks to rival cars from Aston Martin and Maserati, but it also has the performance to beat out Ferrari and Lotus Cars top models.
The Koenigsegg Agera R broke six world records in one incredible session in 2011, including 0–186–0 mph (0–300–0 km/h) in only 21.19 seconds. The 2015 improvements were released as the Agera RS, which holds a record-setting top speed of 277.87 mph (447.19 km/h).

Koenigsegg CCR
Trying to follow in the footsteps of the first production Koenigsegg car, the CC8S, is quite the challenge. Yet the Swedish carmaker delivered in full by enhancing aerodynamics with a new front diffuser, reengineering the suspension and brakes, and adding a second Rotrex supercharger to get over 800 horsepower out of a V-8 engine.
The Koenigsegg CCR surpassed expectations, taking the title for the world’s fastest production car in 2005 at 241.01 mph (387.87 km/h). Speed records don’t last forever, and the CCR’s achievement was eventually surpassed by the Bugatti Veyron.
The CCR continues to be a popular model, with recent auction prices higher than the new CCX model. Its design is timeless, and the driving experience is unrivaled, hitting the sweet spot between insanity and thrill.
